Modern seal for front of camshaft

I have the full gasket set for my 1918 engine, which I am reassembling. Whilst it has a modern seal for the front of the crankshaft it has the old felt seals for the front of the camshaft. Is it possible to obtain a modern seal, in the UK, for this? The UK Register does not hold them. Regards, Colin.

my standard advice is 'call Langs', but that's an expensive proposition for you, huh? In that case, see this:

or measure OD/ID/depth, and order an appropriate SKF seal from their on-line catalogue.

Here's the # for a CR seal:
12458
You should be able to order directly from a parts house over there. This one is very thin with a metal frame so it can be modified easily to glue onto the outside on the front of your engine. Some guys install this into the inside but this can cause issues when you want to remove the timing cover later.
Good Luck

I used a modern camshaft seal ordered from Snyder's. It fit in the recess somewhat loosely, but this is normal as some castings are different from year to year. The only problem I ran into was how to get the seal "lips" over the sharp edge of the cam where the threads end. I solved that by turning an aluminum "bushing" whose outer diameter was a couple thousandths larger than the cam. The center was drilled so as to slide over the threaded portion, and the end slightly tapered for the seal to slide over. I oiled the "bushing" and pushed the seal on it, then slid the bushing over the cam, then pushed the seal in place. Worked like a charm. JBWeld was then worked around the seal edge. If the seal needs replacement in the future, a propane torch will heat the JBWeld until it releases.

George, I believe the poster was referring to a modern crankshaft seal. Next time try Ultra Black sealant to pot your seals in instead of JB weld. It seals much better and is flexible which is good during the heating and cooling of the engine. Much easier to get apart as well.. Many guys use a wrap of black electrical tape to protect the seal during install also.
YMMV

Sorry George, I read the original post again and put my glasses on... Cam shaft seal is SKF9853 over the counter at your supply house.
