has anyone powdercoated the silver on the rim lock? I was wondering what color silver to use

Powder coating can be too thick in some applications where components have to work, such as rim latches. I would recommend spray on cold galvanising around the latch and metalised silver paint for the exposed parts of the rim. This is a close replication of the electo zinc plating used originally.

Originally the rims were galvanised. A platers can add a coat of zinc for you, just specify not to be too thick,

Galvanising and electro zinc plating both result in the deposition of zinc on the steel. Often Galvanising is the term used as the description for both processes The processes are quite different. Electro plating gives a thinner,smoother, more uniform but less lasting finish. Hot dip galvanising involves the components being immersed in molten material. The deposits are not as smooth. They are thicker and last longer. In other posts there have been reports of this thick coating clogging up parts like rim latches, making for real difficulties freeing them up again. This added thickness might also be a problem with truck rims and lockrings fitting as neatly as they should.

Hot dip galvanising is usually done in batches, and charged by weight of components. This means larger numbers are needed to get an economic price.
Electro zinc plating usually does not have this restriction and smaller numbers can be catered for.
