Mats - 1926 Hardtop coupe

Post by lirogo27 » Thu Mar 17, 2022 10:34 pm

Hello. I am about to purchase my first Model T this weekend. I have not been able to find a good alternative for trunk and cabin floor mats. Rubber mats appear only available for cars up to 1925. It looks like the 1926 mats were wool? Langs has a carpet set but it is wool and close to $300 for just the front cabin.

If you have a 1926, please share what you have done. I will continue researching in the interim. Thank you.

1926 and 27 enclosed cars were carpeted. Only 1926-27 open cars came with rubber mats. Think about it; it stands to reason; an open car without side curtains might get quite a bath inside in a heavy rain, but an enclosed car, with the windows up, would stay dry. Until I figured this out, I put the rubber floor mat from a 1926-27 roadster/ touring in my 27 coupe, but removed it when I learned the truth. As for the trunk, I tthink I can safely say and be backed up by almost every 26-27 coupe owner on this forum, that no Model T of any year came with a trunk mat.

Had a carpet once in my 26 coupe, hated it. I like a rubber floor mat, had one in my coupe for decades, stays put, cleans easy, does not twist or slide around. New floor mats come untrimmed, so you cut to fit. Once my rubber floor mat got too torn up to use I threw it away, and now do without any floor covering. Don't miss it a bit, one less thing to take off to adjust the bands and lube the driveshaft. No floor mat in the trunk, don't think Ford ever provided one. One more thing to get in the way of accessing the battery.

If you want a mat in the trunk, there are several suppliers that sell matting by the foot. You will have to cut and fit. None would come as a premade item. Do an internet search for suppliers.
1926/27 open car front might work, pedal/hand brake spacing would be the same. Don't know if length/width would cover the whole floor. The size will be shown in the Langs listing; https://www.modeltford.com/item/3624F.aspx
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

I have a fitted carpet with openings (emergency brake lever, clutch pedal, reverse pedal, brake pedal and starter button hole) in all the right places in my 1926 that was in the upholstery kit supplied by Carter’s Cut and cover in 1972. It fits great but, when I got it, it would not stay put and bunched up, so I purchased a snap kit from McMaster Carr and put a snap on all four corners and screwed the male portion of the snap to the wooden floor. It has been perfect for 50 years and I love it. Jim Patrick

This is a floor mat from IKEA. It fits well in a touring, but you could also use it in a closed car. Only $13.00
The size is a little larger than what you need, so you just turn it over and cut it with a razor blade cutter.

I do not know if it would work in the front. Cheap enough to try to cut one to fit.

Farm supply store here sell rubber matting by the foot. They cut it off a roll of it.

If you want to be correct, open cars had rubber mats and closed cars had carpet. If, in stock, Lang’s catalog shows that they have fitted carpets with hemmed holes in a variety of colors (black brown and grey). They also have the snap kits for securing the carpet to the wooden floor. Snyder’s only has the rubber mats for open cars that do not fit closed cars unless they are trimmed to size and it is very difficult to trim that thick rubber so it looks good. Jim Patrick
