Two 1803s that I I have questions about.
One is a Stewart 1803 and stamped 1913 - this one has a rivet holding it together
Stewart Another 1803 this has a nut holding it together
one is a right and one a left. How does one tell a right from a left?
What years and which model speedometers?

Hi Darrell,
The "1802" number is cast into the upper half of the swivel and is only a Stewart part number, and "1801" and "12003" is sometimes cast into the lower half of the swivel, and these numbers are also Stewart part numbers. I have not seen "1803" used on a Stewart swivel. The method of holding the swivels can be a pressed collar or cap and a 1/4' 20tpi nut and threaded shaft. The cap or collar is earlier than the nut. The nut was introduced around 1922. The Model 1913 indicates that the swivel has a 2.5:1RH ratio. The Model 1959 indicates the swivel has a 2.5:1 LH ratio. The model number is STAMPED (not cast) into the swivel. I hope this helps. Russ Furstnow

they are both 1802. the one with 1913 stamped is the one with a revit. the one with the nut has 12003 embossed. when looking at them now, only one is stamped. Do the RH and LH look alike?. The 1913 one, if I turn the drive shaft, the one that truns the chainlink cable turns on both of them. both turn counter clockwise.

On both of them if I turn the drive counter clockwise, the slotted one also turns counter clockwise.

Darrell, whether the swivel output is R or L depends on the gears inside
.. The housings are the same, with the part numbers cast onto them. The 1913 tells which swivel drives which way. This is stamped into the casting. If both you swivels have the output turning the same way, they are both 1913 numbered units. The 1913 has nothing to do with any date.

Darel, orientate both the input and output shafts so they are both pointing at you. Then turn the input shaft, if the other shaft turns the same direction, it's a left hand drive. If the 2 shafts turn opposite directions, it's a right hand drive.

I have one marked 1913 and it is a RH one. The other 1802 is not stamped, but is a left hand one.
