I have a Sept 1916 Engine and and plan on using the improved large drum transmission.

Is a 26/27 Hogs Head required or does it matter. If yes, then what about the upper two mount bolts that go into the block. The 1916 block is not drilled for that.

I can state with certainty that an improved T transmission (wide brake drum) will fit in a '23 3 dip pan, but you must use the standard narrow brake band and the standard hog's head. I do not believe that a wide band would clear the pan, thus you cannot use the later hog's head.

Now, will it ALSO fit an earlier pan? I am not certain.

The question you need to answer for the forum is: "Why are you contemplating this transmission swap?" The answer to that will yield definitive help.

If you are going for better brakes, wider brake band, you need a 4 dip pan and a '26-27 standard hog's head AND reinforce things as those pans are more flexible than the older pans (thus the two extra securing points on top which you will not be able to make use of). There is some engineering to consider with that overall swap. If you want better brakes, get some accessory brakes and keep your old transmission, as that is a much better brake and doesn't come with all of the added challenges

The 26-7 hogs head is required if you want the wide brake band. Short of making a custom offset band. The pedal shaft is positioned back to center the band on the drum. The HH ears need to be trimmed a lot or removed. The HH & the pan(4 dip) have the extra clearance to allow the wide drum band to clear.

If your goal is to have the replaceable clutch shoes, the drum can be cut down to fit with the other '16 components.

To use the wider brake band you must use the 26-7 hogshead and a 4 dip pan, or the wide band will foul on the pan.

I’m collecting parts for a future project and needed some clarification. I have a nice large drum transmission and A nice 4 Dip pan. The Hogs head is the next part I’ll be looking for. Thanks

and like mentioned before, some stiffening to keep things from flexing since the hog's head will not bolt to the engine

I know of a car that had the crankshaft break at the flange. It had a 1925 block with 4 dip pan and 26 hogshead. Having seen how much flex there is in the pan without the two bolts up top, I can't say I was surprised.
