Starter Bendix There is a small sleeve which fits at the very end of the bendix at the end of the gear where it slides into the flywheel. There is a hole through the end of lit and also two notches in the end which line up with the holes. Should there be some sort of pin through this hole? What holds it onto the bendix. The part labeled avalable only in 5018 set.

Norman, there is no pin
If you will look down in there, you will see that there is some staking which expands into the holes, which holds things from unraveling.

There are 2 holes for the Staking of the threads to keep that end locked on. Those "notches" are the staking of a center punch displacing the metal into the "lock" holes. When rebuilding,(removing the end) Its an advantage to switch ends with another unit to get 2 fresh stakes.
After the restake, try on a starter shaft. The bendix must slip over the starter shaft. If not, dress down the stakes a bit with a round file.

I use the two holes when removing the collar. I put two very short bullet head nail pieces in the holes and grip the collar in some soft jaws in a vice.. With the bendix bolt in the gear end, a large crescent wrench can be used to drive the piece to over come the stakings The nail heads prevent the collar from turning in the soft jaws.
Rather than swap the collar from another bendix, I give the original one a light touch on a linisher belt so that it goes back on a little further. This gives a new start for the stakings needed.
Hope this helps.
