Holes on top of running board shield

Can anyone tell me what the holes along the 26-27 running board shield (splash aprons) are for? I understand that the front ones are for mounting to the hood riser. The ones I can't see any use for (on a 27 Roadster anyway) are the 5 holes along the top which are just under the body.

I have posted a picture of Rootlieb's product because it is easer to see the holes. I've marked the 5 places my shields have holes, the Rootlieb part has 4.

Additional info: The front and rear of the marked holes are 5/16" and the three holes between are 1/4".

For fasteners.

Once you have the splash shields in place, anchored to the front and rear fenders, and running boards you add fasteners.

That way the splash shields are 'fitted' to the body gap, and align best, there will be some gap, but push or pull in on the top of the shield to get the best position. Anchor the shields then.

Use small washers or fender washers under the heads of wood screws. The washers prevent the screw head from tearing loose on the sheet metal when the T flexes over bumps. Drive the wood screws into the body blocks positioned depending on body style. Photos are a touring car.

Now I see why the body blocks need two holes. The forward block uses the center hole and the middle block (shown below) uses the end hole - that way the block reaches all the way over to where it can receive the fastening screw for the running board shield.

I even recognize the original screw hole now that I know what it was for. So much hardware was missing when I pulled this car apart seven years ago.

I bought reproduction blocks and they only have a hole in the center. They'll be coming back out for an extra set of holes.

Thanks for the info Dan!

By the way, of the five round holes along the top of the shield I can only use two - so the other three holes are for other body styles.

The slotted front hole lines up with the little block screwed into the bottom of the cowl, no problem.

Yep, those 2 blocks go into the front channel rail near the cowl. Red arrow and circled one of the blocks.
