Maybe waiting for some straw boss to tally loads ? Or tell them where to unload ? The other T "truck" off to the right appears to be similarly laden, but with what ??
Great photo !! I live the "hood" !

The roundness and size of the lumps in the sacks give me a guess of potatoes……

Looks like turnips. Only tool needed to fix it is the hammer. Must be waiting on Amazon to deliver parts or he doesnt want to go home!

Soooo.... why is the floorboard sitting on the running board next to a hammer? Methinks more is going on than meets the eye.

If that is a local photo, it is likely to be potatoes. The poster is in Idaho. Also the floorboard is out and notice a lot of oil on it? This is a later model which very likely had a starter. I think he tried to fix it with his hammer but found the magnet had gone through the hogs head and he needs a tow. Also notice the bucket on the cowl. Must have drained something. I think the truck is old because one headlight lens is out and the rear fender is bent. Whether or not it had a hood? Maybe the cover is in case it should rain. I zoomed in to maximum size and can't read the state on the license plate. It looks like it starts with an I but is longer than Idaho. Maybe Indiana or Illinois?

The fellow in the car doesn't look very happy. Also, if you look behind the car isn't that a tropical tree / bush? Maybe Florida or somewhere that gets enough rainfall to support what appears to be abundant vegetation.

....and if she's as slow as my wife is at getting ready to go anywhere, I imagine he's had time to do a band change.

OUCH!!! It's going to take some time to get her out of my mind.
I did some searching about the photo. (the guy in the T)
"Farmer sitting in broken down Ford truck waiting for garageman near Amite, Louisiana(1938) by Russel Lee"
The photo appears several places including this close up. I call him Gus for lack of better info.
Tangipahoa Parish is the number one producer of strawberries in the state. Hay, corn and rice are other crops. they are a major oyster processing center too. It's fun what is out there on the web.
Those characters certainly get one's imagination going.

Thanks for posting this Rich. I've seen that photo many times. Even on placemats in a restaurant! I don't suppose "Gus" could have ever imagined that folks would be looking at his image 84 years later and wondering what he was up to! He looks like a man that has some strong opinions

And a cool hat, by the way...

Have always liked that photo. A lot to speculate about.
The T in the foreground edge is full of sacks too in its bed.
Grumpy Gus is just relaxing after trying to crank her over. In fact the crank handle is now stuck, so big floor board is out to see why driveshaft won’t turn, hammer there to use the claw to lift out that board.
Gus is mostly sad as the beer can on the rear fender is now empty.

Darn it John! I scrolled past that young lady's photo again and it litterally sent a chill down my spine.
