Shoutout to Snyders! Carb getting rebuilt instead.

Post by Guardian1fox2 » Fri May 20, 2022 10:41 am

Got a call from Snyders this morning. They told me the carb I had sent them as a core for an NH, while looks like an NH, was actually a Wizard Improved Carburetor. Sent me 2 pages to my phone of documentation for me to look at which I’ll include here.

He said that the wizard was a straight through bore design and even had a small heating element in the throat and a different flapper; and that they were uncommon and just wanted to call and instead of swapping it out for an NH, for the same price he’ll have their guy rebuild it. I opted for that, and really impressed by their service. I had no idea and I can’t wait to get it back new!

I believe that Wizard carbs were sold by Western Auto

Yes, these carbs were sold through Western Auto under their Wizard name. The carbs were made by Simmons.

Let us know its performance characteristics when you have it running.
I have several, all the variations, but have not run one.
How do the compare to a NH? Top speed, idle, stability of the mixture setting @ idle & hi speed, acceleration, etc.

Said it’ll be a couple weeks until I get it back, I’ll report back when I can. I’ve never had anything else so I’m unsure how it compares

It's a flapper-style carb...it should start like a Kingston L-4 with no choke unless very cold, and then pretty much run like an NH.

Folks call them "straight-through" because there is no "dip" in the casting, but that straight-through bore is covered over by a flapper which acts like a variable venturi. Some folks love them, some are pretty much "meh"...I think it will pretty much depend on what you were used to prior to installing it as rebuilt. It may very well be a nice improvement over what was there.
