Seat upholstery kit

Post by Mark Osterman » Fri Apr 12, 2019 6:03 am

I’m starting to think about replacing my seat covers on the ‘23 runabout. I love the fact that my car has original upholstery but I drive it so much that it’s not going to survive much longer. So, I’m buying a new seat bottom spring and am thinking of buying the seat cushion kit from Langs. Anyone out there used their kit and have opinions. I made all my leather upholstery from scratch for my last T but have never used a vinyl ready made kit before.

I'm thinking about doing the same thing Mark, so I'm interested in the feedback you get.

Mark...by all means...only use Classtique! And by all means, also, I would HIGHLY suggest
you pony up a little extra and just have Mike do the seat bottom work there. Trust me, it's worth
every extra penny! Just ship him your springs and wait for the excellence to return. I also had Elizabeth
from "Class it Up" come out and do the seat backs. Again, money well spent! Just my two cents!

So, I was actually asking about the kit that Lang’s has in their catalog. Is this one made by Classique or do you have to order from them?

Is the Classique that much better for over a $100 difference?

I have reupholstered from scratch. Here is the vintage seat assembly from my old speedster that I rebuilt using leather from a sofa I found on the curb. Also built the bottom assembly from scratch. So, maybe I can do the seat bottom myself. I see that these are compressed during the covering operation.

I can tell you I've dealt with Don Lang personally and he will treat you right. I'll probably be ordering the upholstery for my 27 Roadster from him. How much difference are there from the kit from Langs and a kit from Classtique ?

I've heard people have good luck with Cartouche (which I think is the kits Langs sells), but I have not personally had any experience with it. I used Classtique just like most have responded.

I also know people who have used Cartouche and said they never would again: Ill fitting and made wrong.

Ok .. so that is scary to hear. I have heard a lot of good things about Classique ... so the extra $100 + is worth it?

I have used Cartouche upholstery and top kits about 6 or 8 times Every thing I got from them needed replacement of at least one part of these kits. Made wrong or wrong size. Ok after having them correct the problems. Only used them because my customers wanted the cheapest. Sure miss Carters cut and cover.

The answer to your question Mark is this for a $100 extra I would go with the Classique kit I had a cartouche kit in my 26 roadster and hated how it was built

One caveat. Regardless of who you order your cushion kit from, you need to specify if you want the factory crimping rope sewn into the bottom cushion hem. I received one kit where it was assumed I would hog ring the vinyl under the cushion.

The question of Cartouche is moot. If any of the dealers have their stuff in stock, when it's gone there won't be any more. The company has gone belly up.

Steve I think you're a bit confused. It was Labonny that closed its doors. Unless Cartouche did also ????

Cartouche would impossible to find information on. I've done deep dive searches for it, and it only comes up with Mac's as an authorized dealer, although I know other dealers sell them.

Re;"Cartouche would impossible to find information on" Did a quick check, lots of dealers carry it' but couldn't find any info on who makes it. Cartouche is a trademark not a company from what I could find.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

Cartouche is owned by Mac's. I guess that you could call it a side or back room operation. And, yes, they do sell it to most of the Model T parts vendors.

Mac's is in fact Car Touche. I've not heard one good thing about them. I would go with Classtique. I know Langs sells their kits but I still wouldn't do it.

Cartouche made my top. It took me three years to install it. The original was too small. I mailed it back to them and sent me a new top with my measurements. It fit just fine. Cartouche took care of me, and I am happy with their service.
