The third day was brutal. Because of a short second day, we had a rather long third day. Seventy plus miles from Glendive to Miles City and then back after gassing up. The wind was blowing at 50 MPH. Mostly a head wind going down and a tail wind coming back. I averaged around 40 mph into the wind. On the way back I had enough time on the car behind me to take it pretty easy. The severe side winds at times required attentive driving. I tried to keep my speed under sixty, but on one down hill I hit seventy. The post-run tear down was nearly as brutal as the drive from Miles City. Larry Azeveda was disqualified for having a carburetor that failed the venturi gauge. The next driver, Dan Brown, same thing. The third driver, Tony Cerovski, was disqualified for having four non-Ford connecting rods. This is specifically dis-allowed by the rules. The fourth driver, Mike Stormo, wanted to head home, so declined to have his car torn down. I was declared the winner.

Congratulations Tom on your win and thanks for the information . . . interesting results. Dennis Powers was a 40+ year friend of mine and I've known Dan Brown for some time too. I've always enjoy following the Montana 500 since I first found out about it in 1972 from a Minnesota contestant. Sounds like lots of issues this year declaring a winner. That sure must have been one hell of a drive with that kind of wind!!

Congratulations Tom,
Wow, have there ever been such a number of diqualifications??
We were in that same weather system here in Calgary yesterday with relentless
westerly winds, so I was thinking about you guys just south of the border in
your Model T's on on those prarie roads.
