Hogshead question

Can you use an earlier hogshead on a 26-27 engine?

No, not with a 26-27 transmission.

Sure you could, but you would have to use the narrow 25 back brake band. The 26/27 brake band was wider and its center was moved back as was the pedal to match.

Thanks for the info. I knew the brake band was wider but didn’t know if the pedal would line up.

The wider brake drum is wider to the rear, the front sits in the same place as the narrow drum. So you would only be using the front part of the drum.

As you can see, the answer is "yes". I have a late transmission in my '23.
The question you didn't ask is: "Will an early hog's head on a '26-27 engine need any reinforcing?"
The answer to that is a a most definite "YES!" Your late hog's head on a late engine bolts to the back of the engine and provides considerable stiffness to the crankcase. You will not have that with the early hog's head. With a 4 dip pan and early hog's head you really must run corner stiffeners (which should be there already) as well as a belly band under the crankcase. To do otherwise really risks breaking the crankshaft (sooner or later).
