Cheap gas in 1940 was cheap. Not sure about the years of the other photos

You show the low price of gas, but also remember the rent of $40 per month or filling the grocery basket for $10. However, the $86 net pay check for two weeks!

I agree with Scott %100. I’ve never seen anything like that picture. Special order, perhaps? Wonder if the dealer had a lot of touch up after assembly? And oil and axle lube? Just such wonderful pics, I’ll be first in line to buy the book, Tom

Gasoline's running about $9.00 a gallon (US) in my area, but I can find "cheap gas" for $8,15 at the low cost stations. Not much of a discount but anything helps

Historically the rise in price of gasoline caught the attention of Congress in 1916. This was the beginning of the second term for Woodrow Wilson as president and the second year for the war in Europe (1914-1918).

The increase in the cost of a gallon of gasoline began in 1916.

The 6 January 1916 the "Journal The Automobile" (page 39) carried a short article where Congress was concerned with the price of gasoline, and where the Department of Justice was advised to prepare to investigate those responsible for an increase in gasoline prices.

The article when on to state that the price of gasoline in Washington, DC went up one cent. From 20 1/2 cent a gallon to 21 1/2 cent a gallon . By 13 January 1916 (page 101) Congress was receiving complaints from other parts of the country about gasoline prices. There was still interest in an investigation.

The Justice department stated that one possible cause for the increase in gasoline was the war in Europe ( in case you forgot World War I went from 1914 to 1918).

Also in 1916, again in the same journal, the quality of gasoline was getting poorer.

As the congress prepared to investigate, another party of Congress stated that the investigation was not needed.
And now you know - the price of gasoline has been on the rise since 1916.

I’d like to imagine these three cars were out in the barn as they sit, and someday I’ll find them.

$5 a day in 1920 is now equal to about $9/hr but back then (no TV, Cell Phones etc to spend money on)
15 cent/gallon for 73 octane - now 87 octane is $3.33
But not everything is due to "inflation". Fortunately, Iowa is just 3 miles away
