The timer discussion reminded me of this, so I thought I'd mention it in case anybody is unaware of it. It hadn't occurred to me until John Regan warned me about it.

High voltage can jump across a small gap anywhere, not just in a spark plug. Keep those plug wires away from low voltage wires, especially the one from the magneto. I believe ¼" is enough distance between wires, but I try to keep my plug wires at least ½" away from each other and from low voltage wires.

I suspect my failure to do so may be the reason I can no longer start on MAG.

John Regan pointed the same thing out to me, as possible explanation for why the diode in my "Hot Shot" charger failed. Regardless, it makes sense to keep high voltage wires away from others just to be safe.

Steve, have you checked the AC voltage your mag puts out with an analog meter? That might tell you part of the story.

No, I haven't checked yet. The car runs OK on MAG when I switch over from BAT, but the car won't start on MAG even when it's warmed up, so I'm guessing the magnets have been discharged at least a little. I'll find out for sure when I test.

Won't start on magneto?... Maybe your coils have to be checked by a qualified person.
