Holley G Carb. Rebuild

My 1915 Touring Car is running rough at higher rpm after I’ve replaced all ignition components and I’ve decided to go through the carb. and make sure it is ok as I have never done this yet on this car and feel that some issue with it is probably the culprit.
I have discovered that instead of a needle and seat attached to the float that I instead have a ball valve. Is this a “grose jet” that I have read about? And does anyone know what the correct float level is on the Holley G and how to set it?
Thanks!

I’m also wondering if I should add an in-line fuel filter because I crank and choke and crank and just can’t start car. And then i check plugs and they are dry. Fuel just isn’t flowing and after reading that this ball valves are very sensitive to debris, I’m thinking a filter might be what it needs to do its job right? Any ideas?

The last thing in the world you need as an inline fuel filter. In a gravity-feed fuel system it just makes fuel starvation worse. If you have dirt fine enough to get through the sediment bulb screen, the answer is a clean gas tank.

That ball valve is not the original type. Maybe somebody who has used it can tell us if it's any good.

For settings and adjustments, get the MTFCA carburetor book. It's available on this website if you can find it. I believe all the parts dealers carry it too.

I do have that book and there are many great and ideas and suggestions in there about how to rebuild the carb. and also proper float level settings for other carbs but I was surprised that the Holley G float level setting wasn't in there.

That is a Grose valve and I have had a bad experience with one
I replaced it with original type but with Viton tip. Works well.I like to have a shut off valve at the carburetor, but 1/4" valve is too restrictive, so I run 5/16" line. I also use in-line filters and have never had a problem.

Model T Fix website has pages for rebuilding different carburetors.
This is the link for the Holley G.

They use 5/16” as a float setting.

This is an initial setting. The correct setting is confirmed wet with the 3 screw cover top off, Looking @ the fuel level in the jet bowl.
That dimension is in the service bulletins book, among others. I dont recall off hand. Ill have to check my books unless someone beats me to it.

I run a G on our '14 - they have a reputation of being "temperamental" at best for float setting. The Ford Service Bulletins show a diagram & a special measuring tool to properly set the depth of the gas in the well corresponding to the pick-up tube. Corey Walker set mine up - runs flawlessly !

The beauty of this carb, is that its easy/possible to get perfect by having visual access to the actual fuel level.
NH's have to be fine tuned by determining running performance.
