Tappet question? Not a noise...

Are there any tappets available with an oversized foot (larger diameter) that will fit into a T block? Recall A friend tried A tappets, but i recall a lot of machine work in a space with not a lot of metal and never went any further. Thanks!

Cam lobe contact is centered on the tappet , the diameter of the tappet would prevent the tappet from dislodge ... Wear would be at that location and also where the tappet meets the valve stem after clearance during run. Due to valve stem/tappet wear, clearance using flat feeler guage is moot. ..... Perhaps camshaft removal and tappet removal may need to be done to measure lobe lift and set your stem/tappet clearances.

Yes the vendors have them up to 0.30 on the shaft if that’s what you’re are talking about, they are the adjustable type. I’m not sure about the non-adjustable. If you talking about the head I’ll ditto Moxie26

This is probably a high lift cam inquiry... check into the 292 Y block lifters...

I’m not sure exactly what you mean. If you mean enlarging the tappet holes… yes. They have two sized reamers and tappets to fit: 1/64” over and 1/32” over. They have 1/64” over adjustable tappets. I am posting a picture of 1/64” over reamer and a set of 1/64” over adjustable tappets. Available from Lang’s and Snyder’s. Pictures from Lang’s. Jim Patrick

Thank you Kevin. Have you tried installing them? The only reference I had found was for a gentleman who was rebuilding a "N". Also, have you tried zephyr springs? Saw an A that had that mod.

Replacing the tappets alone will not give you high lift. ... ... Looking to install a hi-lift cam ? .... We have the Stipe 280 in our 26 Runabout, with standard Ford tappets and stainless steel valves set to Stipe settings....runs great
after 20 years.

Thank you Moxie for the reply. Working with a cam builder, trying to find a lifter with a larger foot, as Kevin noted, going for a higher lift. If going to the effort to increase the base circle of cam, a larger foot on the lifter will be beneficial. With a larger base circle, the ramp of the cam becomes less steep, and side load on the lifter is reduced and a higher lift can be achieved. Of course, there is only so much space in that area. All compromises.

Stipe offered a super hi lift cam. They made lifters with a larger head.
I recall 292 lifter heads are no larger than a stock T. I will look in the lifter department & let you know if there is a difference.

The 292/Y block tappet foot is 1" diameter- pretty much the same as the aftermarket T adjustable tappets. Your cam guy should be able to find a profile that will work with the 1" follower diameter. John is correct, Bill Stipe dis make some large diameter tappets doe use with his "Laurel"
cams. AFAIK, those are no longer available.
