21" Split Rims

Post by lmitch » Tue Apr 16, 2019 5:19 pm

I ordered a set of 21" Split Rims from Lang's a while back and had not received any response on the order status. While speaking with them today, they said they cannot get in touch with their supplier. I told them I had the same problem. Does anyone know the status of American Vintage Rims? Is this typical?

Anyone got a set they are willing to part with?

Lee

It seemed like there was about a million of them for sale at Chickasha this year. So, I'm sure someone has a set.

I practically gave away a nice set of 4 there.

Looks good! I need a set for the kid's car we are building up. I am hoping to find a set at one of the local swap meets this summer.

You are clearly ahead of us, but school and sports keep getting in the way!

I am bringing a pile of them with wheels to Luray. Come and look at them. Dan

Thanks Dan, but I'm not going to be able to make Luray. I live in GA and could make it over to Alabama easier.

One of my customers ordered a reproduction 21” rim from one of the major vendors about 7 years ago. The fit to the wheel was so poor he scrapped it and bought a used one. The lugs weren’t even close to correct and the rim had no support around the outside other than the nuts & lugs. Didn’t look right either.

For what it's worth....

I have two reproduction rims that came with a parts chassis. The lug holes don't line up very well at all.

On my originals, they practically fall onto the wheels, whereas putting the repros on always involves some cussing and loss of religion.

The two reproduction rims that I purchased are incorrect in a few areas which is a shame as it could be
easily fixed. I have reported my findings to the supplier
1/
The 4 Lugs are welded from the inside and the weld bead prevents the Tyre from sitting correctly. You need to
grind it off and rework the weld there or the other side.
2/
The Rim join is cut at an angle and not a straight butt as per the originals. Works okay but isn’t correct.
3/
If you have Canadian style rims, the replacements won’t have the 4 small holes drilled in the side of
it to use the original style rim tool
4/
The hole for the Tube Stem to pass through has been drilled on the wrong side OR the latch assembly is fitted back to front.
You will notice this when you collapse the rim to fit the Tyre and are restricted to how far you can go before cutting
the stem off.
Just my findings. Alan
