Installing the manifolds

Post by Norman Kling » Wed Aug 24, 2022 4:45 pm

Yesterday, I installed my manifolds after working on the head gasket and freeze plugs. I use the glands and copper rings. This time, I did the easiest install yet. I have a good straight exhaust manifold so it did not require bending.
This is what I did. I cleaned out the ports in the block scraped out any carbon residue. Then fitted the glands in so they are snug and as round as I could get them. Next, I put a bit of thick wheel bearing grease around each gland on the side exposed after they are inside the block. Then put on the copper rings. This grease holds the rings on while I put the manifold in place. First install the exhaust manifold with the two end clamps in place but in a vertical position which presses on the manifold while I install the intake. The intake manifold goes right on and then I install the two center clamps in the normal horizontal position. Then I rotate the two outer clamps and tighten the nuts (bolts on some models). I start with the two center bolts and work out to the outer ones.
When the engine is first started, there is some smoke from the grease burning off, but that only lasts a few minutes. Easiest install yet, for me.

I was advised to use studs with nuts and not bolts for this procedure. I do not remember why.

Bolts replaced studs and nuts for the 26-27 run

My preference would be studs & nuts. I'd suggest re-torquing the manifold assembly after running the vehicle and check that the exhaust pipe nut is still tight.
