Recently found a nice cowl tank and when taking apart the sediment bowl found these internal parts. The screen is just rolled up and inside the slotted housing and the tapered “cap” isn’t soldered on to the screen housing or the whole thing fastened to the bottom drain screw. It seems to go up into the bowl and sit in a hole at the top but no way to hold it there. Should there be a small spring on the top of the tapered cap?

The screw on cap keeps everything in position and the lead ring gasket seals out against leakage from the threads

Your part is an older repro, with that brass outer sleeve.

The current repro is like the original, a screen soldered to a brass nose to seat into the sediment bowl.

Each fits the same way, with that gasket.

As Dan says, our original 1926-‘27 sediment bowls do not have the sleeve or a spring. I would think that the sleeve would inhibit the performance of the screen by blocking a great deal of the screen surface area. The entire screen should be exposed for better filtering of the gas. As mentioned, there is no spring because the screen fits perfectly between the upper valve portion and the bottom drain nut and when screwed on and tightened, the bottom drain nut holds the screen firmly in place inside the sediment bowl without crushing or distorting the screen.
