I'm trying to remove stuck bearings from Ford Model T starter and generator end housings. It wouldn't be a big deal, but I now have about 10 of these. I've tried heating them but no luck. There's only about 1/8-3/16" of clearance behind the bearing.
Anyone know of a tool that will remove these short of drilling holes in the back of the housing?

Probably won't work on the ball bearing, but for the sealed one you could try packing the cavity behind the bearing with grease, then carve a wood dowel to the size for a sliding, but not too loose fit in the bearing bore. Drive the dowel into the center of the bearing and the hydraulic pressure from the grease will force the bearing out. Folks use this method to remove flywheel pilot bearings. I've seen them use hand soap, or even bread!

Brilliant! I ordered a set of blind bearing tools today. I'll try this on the sealed ones - there are 4 of them.

This is called a slide hammer bearing puller. My Dad had one and it worked great. There are the more expensive ones that have numerous ends to fit various sized bearings. For the generator bearing, the spring loaded arms with the outward pointing hooks are squeezed together and inserted into the hole and released. The arms will open outward catching the inside edge of the hole and the bearing is pulled out by forcefully pulling the slide hammer upward and banging against the underside of the handle at the end of the shaft. Maybe a little Kroil around the outside of the bearing would aid in easing the bearing out when using the puller. Jim Patrick

As Dan suggested, a blind hole puller will work. So would a pilot bearing puller. As for the grease and a rod to drive in, that works too. I saw a video where the guy used a piece of bread and stuffed it into the cavity and used a hammer and rod. It worked great to, and no greasy mess to clean up.

Actually cooked dough… I got lost watching videos on YouTube last night and there are dozens showing how to remove a blind bearing with bread. Fascinating.
