Anyone know why someone would do this to a ball cap?

Maybe someone was going to try to make there own ball bearing forth main???

Yes.. to save a buck - I sold a similar one like yours on eBay for $45

It is not a ball bearing ball cap. Still has Babbitt. But it only 1/2” wide. If I remember correctly didn’t the early watts clutches had the ball cap cut off?
