I saw this on Hemmings. I have no connection to or interest in the sale of this car.

It’s a beautiful car, but incorrectly described.

First of all, it is a S Runabout, not an S Roadster. S Roadsters are cars built after March 1, 1908 that feature a single “Mother-in-Law seat positioned behind the main seat. They were painted a bright read, like the early 1909 Model T touring cars. S Runabout production began in August, 1907 and continues through the end of NRS production in September, 1908. About 2335 Model S Runabouts were built, making the S Runabout the lowest production model in the NRS series.

Second of all, according to the Accounts Receivable records (acc. 623) at the Benson Ford Research Center, Model S Runabout #283 was shipped on September 25, 1907 to C.W. Hewitt of Darlingto, SC. So it is a 1907 car, not 1908.

Neither of these two points harm the value of the car. In fact, knowing it’s original shipping date and destination probably enhances the car’s value.

I see it has a Detroit plate on it so this will not change the providence of this S but Ford must have sent a fair share of parts for the S to Canada, they still built 465 in 1908 and 27 of them in 1909.

Please forgive me if this is thread drift but that intake and exhaust sure does look similar to a T.
And the intake on my pickup is shaped exactly like that.
If you can't help em, don't hinder em'

Mack,

The similarities are really there. I know that the Model T intake works OK on the NRS&SR engine. I believe they are a mirror images or very very close to a mirror image of the T. The NRS&SR have the manifolds on the left side of the engine and the steering wheel on the right while the T has them on the opposite side. If you mount the T manifolds on the NRS&SR they point towards the radiator instead of towards the rear of the car. Not so much of a problem with the carb -- but not so good for the exhaust.

Jeff,

Thank you for posting it. Lots of nice photos.

William,

The gas headlamps and gas (acetylene) generator were accessories on the Fords back then. It wasn't too long until Ford started selling all cars fully equipped (very early 1911 the Town Car was listed without headlamps and then soon after with headlamps.)

From the 1908 Ford Catalog posted at:
https://www.mtfca.com/books/1908/
For the 1908 Model N Runabout: Price Model “N”-$600 F.0.B. Detroit.
IRONING FOR TOP-$5.00 EXTRA and they only sold it with the Irooning for Top so $605
Equipment
Consists of tools and tire repair kit only-lamps, tops, etc., extra. Catalogue and prices on request.

1908 Model “S” Runabout De Luxe Specifications
PRICE—28×3″ tires, 2-side oil lamps, tail tamp, tube horn, storage battery and ironed for top $700, F.0.B., Detroit, Mich.
CATALOG of tops, lamps and other accessories for the asking.

From a different 1908 Ford sales brochure the Model K was $2,800 but if you wanted the top, side curtains and storm front, pair gas lamps and generator the price was $3000.

And for the early 1909 Model Ts the gas headlamps and gas generator as well as roadster and touring tops were still extra cost (accessories ref page 57 McCalley "Model T Ford for Top ref).

See: https://www.mtfca.com/books/1909-catalog/ where it has:
STANDARD EQUIPMENT: Side oil lamps, tail lamp, tube horn and gas lamp brackets. [note it says brackets NOT gas lamps]. Touring Car and Roadster ironed for top.
WEIGHT: 1200 lbs.
PRICE: Touring Car, $850.00; Roadster, $825.00; Coupe, $950.00; Landaulet, $950.00; Town Car, $1000.00. F.0.B. Detroit
