AC brakes and richard Baughmans setup

Post by DHort » Tue Apr 30, 2019 12:59 am

I have the AC brakes and the set made by Richard. I was wondering if you can install the AC brakes in a wire wheel that has a small drum and a large drum in place. I have looked over the pictures of the brakes and still am not sure how they are installed. Any chance someone could take of picture of the parts laid out in the orientation they go in the car, I think that would help. Thank you. dave

NO you can not install that way. From the sound of both post you are trying to mix and match the wrong parts to work. A fiend has the Model T 1926 wires/hubs with small drum brakes and correct backing plates on his 23, that works. The AC's (are you talking about Larry's?) you are trying to mount would not work with the two drums and large backing plates. They are made for small drum/backing plate only. I have a customers car that I need to mount Richard's setup on but have not seen the setup in person yet. I don't know if it sets the parking brake or if the parking brakes are independent, if it is, there would be no way to install the large type parking brake, with the smaller AC brakes inside too so you would have parking brakes.

As I've said many times, wouldn't it be nice if after market brakes were reproduced as the manufacturer intended, with cables?

I have them installed on my small drum 1913 Speedster and the parking/emergency brake is not attached to this setup, it stays independent. Its very important to keep the pivot bolt on the AC shoes with a little space to prevent it from fatigue and breaking the shoe.

Sure they work fine, but read all of this post and the other one;

He is trying to use a TWO drum setup. I may have misunderstood thinking he had a large backing plate setup because of the 26/27 wire wheels. It still boils down to, the AC's cant be mounted inside the larger drum, the lever is centered on the shoe. ?
DHort please update what you are trying to do re the drums and shoes.

Here you go Mark

1. I have a set of AC brakes and a set of Rockys for the small drum.
2. I have a touring with small drum and wire wheels.
3. I have a speedster with small drum and wood wheels, and/or disc wheels set up for a small drum.

I am building a speedster with a 26-27 rear axle so it will require a large drum. I was hoping I could use one of the above sets for this car, but it doesn't look like that is possible.

I think it has been established that you cannot use a large and a small drum with either set. Maybe you could with large Rocky's, but I am not looking into purchasing another set of Rockys.

So I have Richard's setup and it comes with pictures of how Richard set it up. However, the pictures do not really tell me how everything is put together, so I thought I would ask here. Maybe even Richard will see this and respond. Maybe havnfun can take some pictures and show how he set his up.

Thank you.

Why not contact him and see if he can send a set of install instructions.

Here is a previous post I found with more pictures. It appears that a pedal is required with a tab on the bottom for the linkages.

What year is the speedster you are building? Axle housings are plentiful and inexpensive (I've seen a lot of FREE ones). How about using the guts from your 26-27 rear and getting 25 and earlier housings. That will get you the small drums you need for your brakes.

It sounds like there’s a pretty good market for the cable set up for the AC and Rocky Mountain brakes. If somebody were to start making sets of those I think they could do very well.

Given the fact that many people dislike lawyers but always seem to have one on retainer, combined with all the ways to improperly terminate a cable, I suspect liability is the primary cause for no supplier stepping up. Even the mfg of one kind of aftermarket brakes will not sell any actuator with it and insists it's for display only...that is a clue.
