MTFCA Forum

Good day all,
We are attempting to build our EFR (Early Ford Registry) forum viewership, and wish to invite everyone on our MTFCA site to visit. You may register as a guest and post comments or new threads. Anytime you have early brass T era or pre-T info, or questions, please check in over there as well as here.

I’ve noticed over the years MTFCA, HCCA and AACA forums will have a thread or post that would be a benefit on the Early Ford site too.

One of the changes we’ve made that kept many (myself included) from posting was the size limitation of photos/attachments. We’ve raised the size allowance similar to this forum, so no resizing should be needed.

Chris B. has been incredibly helpful tweaking the site, as well as helping fight a “bout” of spam. I jokingly told a few EFR members we might have to change our forum name to “Early Ford and Porn,” however we have that problem in hand (not sure if those are the words to use, but what the heck). We also owe much to Dave D. for all his contributions to the EFR website and forum over the years, as w’ll as to the EFR in general.

Please give us a try. We don’t wish to take any viewership away from our great Model T site, but there may be an opportunity for the two sites to share information.

Interesting! I didn't even know it existed. I guess there are still a few of the pre T Fords in existence today. Rarely see any except in museums.

I’m genuinely surprised. All the more reason for the two sites to interact. A group of us “EFR’ers attend various tours and frequently drive our cars. Our membership includes early Ford owners from around the world, and has even spawned a weekly Zoom gathering.

Usually our best attended event is the Antique Car Run (New London to New Brighton, MN). Usually pre-T Fords make up the largest group, although some years Maxwells outnumber us. We always have a large contingent at Old Car Festival as well as the companion Dearborn to Lansing Tour.

Below, a “group photo” at NLNB a few years ago. Our recently departed friend, the late John Dolan was allowed to join us for the Early Ford photo, as his lone marquee foreign entry had no other participants. His 1908 Rolls looked right at home among the Ford sixes, fours and twos.

It is a wonderful site with great pictures of cars and projects.
I have enjoyed going there for many years to dream and see delightful things.

Below: one of our current threads regarding the December 1907 Olympia (England) auto show. The Ford booth had a car that looks strikingly similar to the 1908 Ford Model S Roadster. Only trouble is, that model wasn't ready for market until late March 1908. One of many questions this photo raises is, how did Ford U.S. come to use the same body style several months later? Other questions include, how did the extended body touring and town car on display come to look exactly like the advance FMC U.S. pre-T drawings, down to the high tank T style radiator?

Here you go, Norm. Pre-T cars being driven. Of course Piquette counts as a museum, but these early Fords aren't in it. They just came to visit.

Hey Rob! I notice quite a bit of differences between the USA model S roadster and the English pre-S MIL roadster. The whole cowl is quite different, in shape, cut, and depth. The seat riser is very different, with the USA version nearly straight and the English one flared out considerably. Overall, the basic design is quite generic, used by many small to mid size cars of the era. Early English bodied Fords were known for fancier bodywork and designs. That they should look so similar I think is a natural progression of design in the era.
That car with the higher radiator tank is interesting! Again though, likely a natural progression looking very similar.

Rob, thanks for sharing. Thanks to Rob's posts over the years, I've developed an interest in these cars and a respect for the people who created them. Seeing a few of the surviving cars in real life, along with their owners, drivers, and mechanics at OCF is always a treat.

One suggestion for the EFR forum would be to add captions to the photos indicating the year and model of the vehicle. I'm sure everyone else knows this stuff, but I'm still learning.

Thanks JB. That’s a great idea (dates/model). A group of us talk every week, I’ll bring that idea up. We are also working to make more information about early Fords available through the website, and will post updates as we add information/photos etc. Every pre-T Ford provides a roadmap of Henry Fords goal to create an inexpensive, easy to service and repair, yet advanced car for the masses. As a result, I’ve always felt the EFR has a special relationship with the Ford Model T clubs.

Below, a 1905 Ford Model B leads what is claimed to be the first “orphans parade,” car caravans organized to give orphans a day of auto riding, often to camps or resorts. The tradition grew to a point where most major cities had “Orphan Parades” or other similar events involving automobiles.

The Early Ford Registry is planning to attend the Model T Homecoming in Richmond this year. We hope to present all of the early Fords A through S. I plan to bring my 1906 Model F and 1908 S Roadster.

Hey there Rob! I am pleased to see you furthering the EFR website. I don't spend a lot of time there, but have wandered in and spent a significant amount of time there for a few years now. I don't always sign in, but occasionally do, and sometimes even comment or have asked questions.

I thought I saw a similar "invite thread" here a couple months back. I thought about some things I wanted to reply, but when I went back, I couldn't find the thread. Now I still can't remember what it was I wanted to say.

I know that awhile back, maybe a year ago? I tried to check into the EFR site and only got error messages saying the site was unavailable. I tried a couple back door approaches thinking my bookmark might have failed, but they didn't work either. I tried a few times over a few weeks, same result. About a month later, I tried again, and it was back, with no comments about it having been down that I could see.
I was concerned about how David Dunlavy was, but later I thought I saw a few comments on this site from him? So I guess he is okay?

Another concern or question? I used to occasionally enjoy looking through the photos archive section. It had been quite active for several years, with photo reports of tours and shows, member's projects and collections, old photos and various finds.
And then it stopped.
About a year or so ago, I checked the date of the last updated photo posting? It was over two years old! No recent Old Car Festival or New London to New Brighten pictures. Just wondering if there was a reason for people not posting pictures?

If I can find a few quiet minutes in the next week or so, I will look in again.

Yes, we're trying to bring more viewership to our site, and improve/create relationships with other clubs that sometimes have pre and early T topics that would be great to share on our site too. Dave D. has done a remarkable job getting us to this point, and has helped us attempt to fill his shoes. I'm not "IT" literate, however, we'll try to pick up the slack and continue to build the site.
