Ya Tom, I was thinking about that when I rotated the rear wheel easily.. Do you think it might engage when the drive shaft is turning? I hope someone here that's familiar responds.

Depends upon the model transmission.
If it is the "six speed" version, actually a three speed progressive shift, be very careful. Do not try to force it because you can't!
I had one many years ago, that wasn't very rusty inside, and never did get it loose. There is a big sliding gear with a couple of dog clutches that takes very little rust inside to seize firmly. I soaked it in rust dissolvers and oils for a week and it didn't come loose. After cleaning it up for the third time, I took it to a swap meet and priced it fairly with explanations of what I had done to that point. I did not expect to sell it, but someone wanted it more than I wanted to work with it.
It actually looked pretty decent inside, and I often regret having sold it. I suspect that longer soaking in mild solutions would have freed it up. A good chance you are looking at the same issue.
