Looking at the steering gear bracket on my TT, It sure looks to me that the design intent was a spacer bushing between the bracket and the frame. One was not present on my TT nor is one shown in the price list of parts in the TT section. The actual bracket bears casting number TT932, which is Factory No.TT996 and Part No. 3539C St. Brkt with bushing - truck. The catalog sketch shows the hole.

Is a bushing present on any of the TT’s owned by forum members here? I wonder if the bushing transmitted frame flex to the steering gear and led to breaking or cracking that upright section of the steering gear and was, at some point eliminated?

A block of wood goes in that gap.

Mike, you can figure out the size from the frame and bracket dimensions then make your own with some hardwood. Remember to chamfer the inner corners to fit the bend of the frame rail.

Thanx Adrian! Ive looked at 7 TT frames now that still have the firewall and steering attached. Not a one had the bolt that should be there even if the wood rotted away long ago.

You really do need a block there. The steering bracket/frame connection is too flexible and can induce death wobble without the extra support.

There is also a cupped dust washer that goes on the end of the steering shaft before the nut.

It's important to use the hardwood block and all the original bolts. After running a new assembly a few dozen miles, re-check all fasteners and the pitman nut for tightness, then safety wire or install cotter pins where appropriate.
