How Do Ya’ll Do It ?...

...I’ve recently had the good fortune to acquire most of the correct ‘3 bolt’ muffler for my 1914 runabout. Thankfully, the center and middle ORIGINAL baffles are still in good shape as is the tail pipe. However I had to order the external muffler shell from one of our suppliers. Therein lies my problem: The cast iron muffler diameters are precisely 5 1/8” diameter but the repop muffler shell is only 5” in diameter. Consequently, IT DOESN’t friggin’
FIT !! I’ve very laboriously tried to flare the ends but feel there’s a better way.... Ideas ?

I’ll bet the repop guy was thinking the shell went inside the ends instead of outside. It could be you know! But if it won’t go inside the ends they just made it wrong. I replaced the outside shell on the muffler of my 24 Coupe and it was a really tight fit and it seems like I flared it but I’m not sure. But it was really tight.

Got to a scrap yard and see if they have a small piece of pipe that will fit.

I rebuilt my 15 muffler a few years ago. I believe I bought the shell from Chaffin’s and they had both diameters, for a 3 bolt and the later single bolt muffler. The shell I purchased fit as it should. Maybe give Chaffin’s a call.

Before you order call the supplier and to measure the largest shell O.D. of their product. Lang’s will help you about that and I’m sure others will top. But do ask about it.

George, If all else fails, get a piece of the same thickness sheet metal from your nearest 'tin' shop, and "roll your own".

Do any of the repops have the correct double fold crimps along the joins? I found the only way to get them made correctly was at a sheet metal shop where they can roll flue pipes. You can get two sheds from a standard length of flue pipe

Good advice - all. Thanks ! I was given the correct muffler shell kit for an earlier ‘3 bolt’ muffler and truthfully didn’t know there was a difference in it and the later ‘1 bolt’ kit. So I called the “delivery boy”, Steve Lang, who delivered my parts to Chickasha. He said both of these kits are made by Snyders and there is, indeed, a difference in OD of outer shells. Said the ‘1 bolt’ version is a slightly larger OD. So he committed to send me another outer shell

Lang’s comes through again !!
