What size are the rivets that attach the rear axle tube to the pumpkin?

Here is a discussion that might help.

Allen B uses 1/4" unf bolts. I have used 1/4 " bolts too. I don't remember having to drill the holes.
I'll keep looking for something more helpful.

Brendan, what year of axle is it that you are working on? Answers will vary accordingly.

Allen. It’s a 21 to 25 type. It’s a shortened housing with a Ruckstell center that I want to convert back to a standard length unit.
Shortening housings to make snowmobiles was common around here.

OK then. My bolt method is for fixing the early housings which had the flare on the inside end riveted to the housing. Your will have straight tubes between the backing plate and the centre housing. I have replaced some loose rivets in those. I drilled out one rivet to find the size and bought replacements. These were fitted with the round head on the inside, and held in place with a heavy tapered buck, while they were heated on the outside end and that was formed. I did them one at a time.

Thanks Allan. A tapered buck is the only way I can see to do it also.
