bendix spring loops not lining up

Hi all,
I will be replacing the bendix spring on my starter. The spring loops at the ends don't line up. What problems would that pose? I've read here that the loops should line up.
Thanks,
John

Hi John,
The driven end of the Bendix is free to rotate on the shaft. The spring acts like a cushion for the drive. The question about the spring eyes
lining up is considered a indication the spring has been damaged or has fatigued wich leads to breakage. If you purchsed a new spring from
a reputable vender & the eyes are not perfectly in line I would just make note of it so you don't think its damaged the next time you deal
with it ( I don't know about you but I forget little details like that after a year or so) JMHO.
Craig.

Hi John,
Did I missunderstand? I was under the impression you were asking about a new spring you purchased not having the eyes lined up. For reasons
of discresion being the better part of valor I will not elaborate on why I have so many springs on hand but checked 4 new ones purchased from
a reputable supplier and 2 have the eyes lined up & 2 do not? This is what to look for in a used spring. If it looks like this don't use it!

New springs usually have the two holes lined up. Many, if not most working bendix assemblies when removed, will have the spring deformed somewhat and the holes out of line. it is the nature of the beast. I just carry a complete spare assembly in my tool box, just in case.
