What are these non Model T cotter pin things called

Post by bmklawt » Mon May 29, 2023 4:14 pm

I was changing the bearing on my Prius last week and they used these cotter pin looking things on the castle nuts and I thought they would be great to use on my 1927 Touring until I get the bugs worked out after rebuilding everything on this car, I cant find them because I cant figure out what there called, anybody know?

We called these hairpin like things 'Fokkerpin' or 'Fokkernadel' in German, it seems Anthony Fokker invented them.

Actually, they're rather ingenious. Fokker died in 1939 so it is possible some of these found their way onto European Model T's.

Yes they are great, and a staple part in aircraft since way back when, probably even before the "Great War" of 1914/18

Bruce, I would not recommend those as a cotter pin replacement on a model T.

Jeff

I am curious as to why not use them?

that is precisely what Toyota is using them for

I would not use them due to their looks (because I am one of those reprehensible people who like their "T" to look like a "T"), but they are certainly serviceable, and they are designed for that purpose.

As I had mentioned earlier, it is a Toyota equivalent cotter pin; it isn't a random pin being misused...it has a part number; it works on modern cars with castle nuts...I can't see a problem but am always open to learning.
