We're mag coils sealed?

Post by Dennis_Brown » Thu Jun 08, 2023 10:49 pm

When Ford built magneto coils, we're they coated with any sealer before or after mounting on the plate?
Also what type of fabric were they wrapped in and what would compare with it today?

Here is the Ford spec on the insulating varnish, note the first sentence that described the assemblies were coated.

Cotton twill overwrap on each coil, and final assembly coated in shellac-based insulating varnish.

Now a days, the coil wrappings are sealed with brushed on “Glyptal”, which was originally developed by Thomas Edison and his Company, GE to seal the wire windings of electric appliances such as fans and generators. It comes in clear and red. Since it is so tough and impervious to oil, many of us here have used it to coat the inside of our Model T crank cases and oil pans to prevent the buildup of sludge on the interior surfaces and to brighten the interior of the engine to improve the visibility inside the engine.
