After melting the old babbitt out, when pouring the 4th main, does it need to be tinned before pouring? Seems to work fine without, but don't know if it needs it.

I have melted out more that where never tinned than those that where!

Try it, but, I had some done that were not tinned & they should have been. Poor adhesion.

Good practice is to 100% tin the ball cap prior to pouring. Why take a chance of having a failure??
Its not that much more effort when things are hot.

Ok I will try both ways. The one I did looks ok, have a couple of more I need to do.

Tinned, poured and bored.

Looks OK is not the issue, working OK is, they are tinned for a correct bond, if not then all you have is a babbitt sleeve which will fail.

I believe it ought to be tinned. That will lock the babbit in place and give the best heat transfer. As things wear and clearance devolps, the tinned bearing would be less likley to loosen, spin, or crack.

It would be more important for a TT or a speedster, or any car that is to be driven enthusiastically.

i have done a bunch of ball caps ... i have never seen a ball cap that was not tinned ... many are not a full tinning , BUT , all show some attempt at a tinning ...also , i mailed your endcap this afternoon ... always an optimist ...Gene French

Tinning it is then.

. I like this stuff for tinning. All the plumbing supply have it around here. Don’t forget the flux brushes

One more thing, I save old babbitt for tinning, lay a connecting rod on its side and pour the channel with babbitt. This make’s just the right size sticks sticks for rubbing on what you want tinned.

If you use a model A rod for that, you get wider and longer strips.

I have used a piece of steel right angle to make the sticks.
