The more you educate yourself and thoroughly evaluate potential purchases, the better equipped you'll be to find a Model T Ford that suits your needs and preferences.
Question #4: "What type of oil should I use for a Model T Ford?"
For a Model T Ford, the original recommendation was to use non-detergent SAE 10W-30 or SAE 10W-40 motor oil. However, it's important to note that the oil recommendations have evolved over the years, and modern oil formulations may offer improved performance and protection for the engine.

Here are some factors to consider when choosing oil for your Model T Ford:

1. Classic or modern oil: You have the option to use classic non-detergent oils, which mimic the original formulations, or modern oils with enhanced additives and detergents.

2. Viscosity: The Model T Ford was designed to operate with a single-grade oil, and a common choice is SAE 30 weight. However, depending on your climate and driving conditions, you may consider slightly lighter oils, such as SAE 20 or even multi-grade oils like SAE 10W-30, which offer better cold-start lubrication.

3. Oil additives: Some enthusiasts opt to use oil additives specifically designed for classic engines. These additives can help protect against wear, reduce oil consumption, and improve engine performance.

4. Synthetic oils: While synthetic oils were not available during the Model T era, some owners have chosen to use synthetic oils in their vintage cars. Synthetic oils offer excellent high-temperature stability and may provide enhanced protection for the engine.

It's recommended to consult with experienced Model T Ford enthusiasts, mechanics, or vintage car experts for specific oil recommendations based on your driving conditions and the engine's condition. They can provide valuable insights and suggestions based on their practical experience with Model T Fords.

Additionally, always refer to the owner's manual, if available, or seek guidance from reputable Model T Ford resources to ensure you are using the most suitable oil for your specific Model T Ford and its operating conditions.
Wow! What do you think?

Every forum I participate in, now has a thread pertaining to ChatGPT. Personally, I hate it. In the case of an antique phonograph forum I participate in, people are asking AI to create "historical" accounts based on fantasy scenarios. The AI output is very believable, and the internet being what it is, this fake garbage is out there forever, for unwitting researchers to stumble upon. Can't wait for the new "AI-Timer" to debut!!!

BTW, this topic, if it belongs anywhere on this forum at all, should go under "Off Topic". (Again, my personal opinion)

It has come to this..asking Artificial Intelligence for advise.

Oh why be old fashion, what does AI advise to adjusting Model T Ford Coils:

CHATGPT
To adjust the Model T Ford coils, follow these steps:

1. Prepare the necessary tools: You'll need a screwdriver, a coil adjusting tool (such as the Ford Coil Adjusting Tool), and a coil tester (optional but recommended).

2. Locate the ignition coil box: The Model T Ford has a wooden coil box located on the driver's side of the vehicle, near the firewall. Open the coil box lid to access the coils.

3. Identify the coils: There are four ignition coils in the Model T Ford, each corresponding to one of the four cylinders. The coils are cylindrical in shape and are attached to the coil box.

4. Start the engine: Before adjusting the coils, start the engine and let it warm up for a few minutes. This will ensure that the coils are operating under normal conditions.

5. Adjust the coil contacts: Using a screwdriver, adjust the contacts on each coil. The contacts should be set to a specific gap distance, typically around 0.025 inches (0.635 mm). You can use a feeler gauge to measure the gap accurately.

6. Use the coil adjusting tool: Insert the coil adjusting tool into the coil box, one coil at a time, to adjust the coil tension. The tool allows you to turn the adjusting screws on the coils to achieve the correct tension. Follow the specific instructions provided with the adjusting tool to perform this step correctly.

7. Test the coils: After adjusting the contacts and tension, it's recommended to test the coils using a coil tester. The tester will check if the coils are firing correctly and producing a strong spark. If any of the coils fail the test, you may need to readjust them or replace them if necessary.

8. Repeat for all coils: Repeat the above steps for each of the four coils in the Model T Ford.

9. Reassemble the coil box: Once you have adjusted all the coils, close the coil box lid and ensure it is securely fastened.

It's important to note that adjusting Model T Ford coils requires some experience and knowledge of the specific procedures involved. If you're not familiar with working on ignition systems or don't feel confident, it's advisable to seek assistance from a knowledgeable mechanic or an experienced Model T enthusiast.

I'll stick with my old methods.....

Call me old fashioned, and I don't care, but A.I. is gonna end up being the end of mankind as we know it someday. Hopefully most of us won't be around to witness it when it gets out of control. There are already some tekkies who are already concerned. And others who say it's no big deal. Only time will tell.

I know someone who is so hooked on it she spends more time "talking" to it than she does human beings. Seriously. She even says she prefers it.

What it is is a program that has access to an unbelievably large data base. Basically everything. And I do mean everything. The answers given here for instance are actually taken from, get ready, the Forum and a few antique manuals.

Gee Matt....you picked some easy ones...lol

Ask your new buddy what the final clearance should be between a triple gear bush, and the pin on a Model T transmission? That may be a really (non) inciteful (or is it, insightful) answer :D
Q: what the final clearance should be between a triple gear bush, and the pin on a Model T transmission?
The final clearance between the triple gear bushing and the pin in a Model T transmission is typically specified within a specific range to ensure proper operation and minimal wear. The recommended clearance for this component can vary slightly depending on the source and specific application, but a common guideline is to aim for a clearance between 0.0015 to 0.003 inches (0.038 to 0.076 mm).

It's important to note that achieving the correct clearance requires careful measurement and fitting during the assembly process. The clearance should be checked using a dial indicator or feeler gauge, ensuring that the measurement is taken at various points around the circumference of the bushing and pin to account for any irregularities.

If you are rebuilding a Model T transmission or performing repairs, it is advisable to consult a reputable Model T Ford service manual, seek guidance from experienced Model T enthusiasts, or consult with professional rebuilders who have hands-on experience with these specific measurements. They can provide more detailed instructions and specifications based on their expertise to help you achieve the proper clearance for the triple gear bushing and pin in your Model T transmission.
Q: should I use a burnishing or reaming tool for the final clearance should be between a triple gear bushing, and the pin on a Model T transmission
For achieving the final clearance between the triple gear bushing and the pin in a Model T transmission, the commonly recommended method is to use a reaming tool rather than a burnishing tool.

Using a reaming tool allows for more precise control over the final clearance and helps ensure consistent and accurate results. Reaming involves removing a small amount of material from the bushing to achieve the desired clearance, while burnishing is a process of smoothing and compressing the metal without removing material.

When reaming the bushing, it is important to proceed gradually and carefully, removing small amounts of material at a time while frequently checking the clearance with a dial indicator or feeler gauge. This allows you to achieve the recommended clearance range mentioned earlier (typically 0.0015 to 0.003 inches or 0.038 to 0.076 mm) for optimal performance.

To ensure accurate and proper reaming, it is advisable to follow the guidelines and procedures outlined in a reputable Model T Ford service manual or seek guidance from experienced Model T enthusiasts, professional rebuilders, or machine shop professionals who have hands-on experience with Model T transmission rebuilds.

Using the appropriate tools, following proper procedures, and exercising caution during the reaming process will help you achieve the desired final clearance between the triple gear bushing and the pin in your Model T transmission.
Q: Did ford motor company originally use burnishing tool for the final clearance should be between a triple gear bushing, and the pin on a Model T transmission?
Yes, the Ford Motor Company originally used a burnishing tool for achieving the final clearance between the triple gear bushing and the pin in a Model T transmission during the manufacturing process. The burnishing tool was used to compress and smooth the bushing material, reducing its inner diameter and creating the desired clearance with the pin.

Burnishing was a common method employed in mass production to achieve consistent and precise tolerances. It provided a cost-effective way to achieve the desired clearance without the need for individual reaming or machining of each bushing.

However, in a rebuild or repair scenario where you have more control over the process and can take the time for more precise fitting, using a reaming tool is typically recommended. Reaming allows for more accurate adjustment of the final clearance to ensure optimal performance and longevity.

It's important to note that the burnishing method used in mass production may have variations in the resulting clearance, which is why reaming is often preferred in restoration or rebuild scenarios for achieving a more precise and consistent final clearance.
Q: cite your source for information in last response
I apologize for the confusion, but as an AI language model, I don't have direct access to sources or a browsing capability to cite specific references. The information I provide is based on my training on a diverse range of data, including websites, books, and other textual sources.

For specific information regarding the use of burnishing tools by the Ford Motor Company for the final clearance between the triple gear bushing and the pin on a Model T transmission, I do not have a specific source to cite. It is a commonly mentioned practice in discussions and forums among Model T enthusiasts and mechanics who have experience with the vintage Ford transmissions.

If you are looking for more precise and detailed information on this specific topic, I recommend consulting authoritative resources such as Model T Ford service manuals, books on Model T restoration or transmission rebuilding, or reaching out to knowledgeable Model T experts who have hands-on experience with the subject matter. They may have access to more specific references or technical documentation related to the manufacturing processes used by the Ford Motor Company.
So there you go! We have AI spying on us and some making some fake intelligence out of it.

And…sort of neat it sez final to size and surface finish by a burnisher. I have long stated that I felt that Ford ball ream burnished final size and finish on the bushes, have had a few followers over the years. May never know for sure.

Actually, .002” clearance is correct, but there are so many people over the years that insist it isn’t, that the larger clearances have become “accepted”… There are some OTHER factors present in the average T transmission that if not properly addressed, can cause bearing failures that get blamed on clearance. .002”/.0025” clearance makes a nice quiet transmission, even with used gears. .004”/.005” generally makes a noisy transmission. That’s a pretty good indication of which end of the spectrum is “better”. Just my actual experience setting up at least a few dozen transmissions with that .002” clearance and having ZERO issues.
