material under roof wood

Hi all,
Does anybody know what material was on the top edges of the enclosed cars before the factory put the outer wood strips on? It looks like some kind of tar or tar paper or oil cloth. It is black and is used as a filler or void material in areas where the welded pieces of steel are uneven. It also helps to seal out moisture along the top edge.
Thanks,
John

I am certain that you soon will be getting some advise on roofing.

In the mean time should you be where it is a dark and stormy night you may want to search the AACA site, roofing for additional information.

One such item that shows up under automobile roofing is -- https://forums.aaca.org/topic/283093-cl ... -material/

Also if you have access to a DYKES motor manual pre- 1925, there is roofing information available.
