Engine number stamping

I have a T engine with number stamped in proper place. However, the same number is stamped on the other side between exhaust ports also. This stamping is not done as neatly, but same number. The same number is stamped on the head on the left front shoulder. This stamping is amazingly neat. I am thinking this is a replacement engine, but why all the stampings.
