I saw this on eBay and found it interesting as being a dealer invoice of cars shipped by rail car.

The main road to Milford was taken over by the state before 1914, around the same time that improvements were proposed for the Milford-Nashua road (later Route 101A). Automobiles also brought new industry to the town. In 1914 Jake Upham started selling Model T Fords from his farm on Upham Rd. The cars arrived via rail, and later, wagon.

It appears the commission was 15% by 1914. In February 1907 Model N (later R and S) commission was dropped from 20% to 10%. I don’t know how long it stayed at 10. Model K stayed at 20%, the same as preceding models.

I’d like to find an invoice like this for one of the Ford cars that show up on Trent Boggess’ database of FMC accounts receivable. It is the “missing link” between the time the ledgers show the car sent and time payment (draft) was made.

I wonder what the resale markup on the cars was upon sale by Jake Upham?

Upham received 3 tourings, after all discounts, for $1384.50. Each car was $461.50. From the factory, each car was $550. I’m not exactly sure how much over MSRP he would be able to sell each for and make money. If his market is light on cars, maybe. The factory already got its money

Well, George, we don't know if the cars survived, but if you look at the invoice, it appears a couple headlight glasses bit the dust.

Milford and Amherst, NH are just west of Manchester. It appears that Chas. J. Upham may have been a sub-dealer for D.F. Sullivan in Manchester, NH.

These cars could be in FMC Accounts Receivable records, but we will not know until the Benson Ford Research Center reopens sometime in the future (I hope).

The note “Glass in headlight cracked” is also a hoot.
