wheel re spoke issues

I just got hickory spokes for a set of wheels from one of the major suppliers for a set of wheels. One of them had a knot hole in it which they replaced. That should have been a sign. They were the roughest cut spokes I had ever seen. I sanded for hours and primed and filled heavy wood grain. I just pressed them in and the hub fell out, not tight at all. Now I'm going to have to shim at the hub end to use. Getting it centered is going to be tough. I knew I should have sent them off. anybody ran into this?

Maybe you ordered the wrong spokes for the felloe(s) you have. Kelsey or Hayes take a spoke that is a whole 1/32" longer. May not sound like a lot, but 2 X's 1/32 can start to add up when it comes to crush.
It has been a few years since I ordered any spokes, but I would have to say they were not a smooth finish even back then. But then again, I can't compare the ones I got and what you got.

If you can’t get your to short spokes replaced with the correct spokes and you are going to shim. Don’t shim at the hub, shim each spoke at the tenon end with spoke sims , if the tenons are long enough to allow shims. If they aren’t long enough, get new spokes from another supplier, in fact getting the proper lenght spokes is the best choice.

I am definitely not shimmering new spokes, out they come. I am really getting tired of doing thing’s twice. One step forward two steps back.

My take on this is..

If your Hub fell out, then the hole in the center has been machined too big.. if the Spokes are tight to each other, and also at the Fello, then they are the Proper Length..

Too large of a hub-hole = too short of a spoke

hub falling out = shocked look :o

been there done that

Even though you ordered correctly doesn't necessarily mean the order was fulfilled correctly.

They may have sent you the wrong spokes.
