Who makes?

Who makes the leather hold-down straps and top bow saddle pads? Like many other items, they seem to be in short supply. Alternatively, do you know which vendor has them in stock?

Lang's lists them - there are 10 different part numbers depending on the application. Page 179 of their paper catalog. I bought e set from them a few years ago, and they were of good quality and I'm happy with them. I don't know what the current supply is though. I couldn't find them in my Snyder's catalog.

I recommend Russ Furstnow too ....BUT....soak the dyed black leather overnight in Neets Foot oil if you want them to last over a year - otherwise the straps dry out and break....

I was lucky enough to have a brittle old pad for a sample. I took it to the local saddle shop and had a pair of new ones made. I was able to borrow an original strap I could copy.
This was a couple of years ago, and I have no recollection of where I got the buckles.

I believe that R.V. Anderson also has faithful reproductions available including correct or near correct buckles.
A few years ago, my dad made a set of pads and straps for my 1917 roadster using the originals as patterns. There is a saddle shop here in Minneapolis that was established in 1907 and has a fully equipped shop with 100+ year old machinery.
My dad had the shop shave a piece of leather to the correct thickness. He did the rest of the labor himself: cutting correct length and width straps from the leather, putting a radius a one of end of each strap, punching the holes, dying the leather and riveting the loop around the original buckles from my roadster. See attached for the completed straps shown with the originals.
My father also made a set of straps and pads for his 1917 touring (the straps are longer than the touring). They were actually the second set of straps and pads he had made for his touring. He had the first set made by the same shop mentioned above in 1951 but they did all the work for him the first time around. He drove the car down there and they did it while he waited.

Note: if you a stickler, the straps sold by vendors such as Lang's are not correct. They are substantially thicker than the originals, they have two decorative grooves in them which the originals did not have and the buckles are completely incorrect. They are functional but I would consider them to be after-market and not a good facsimile of factory issue.
