Vanderbilt Cup

There have been several revivals of Glidden Tours over the years, and I thought “What if you could retrace the route of the Vanderbilt Cup in Long Island?”

Well, I got my new issue of the AACA magazine today about the Vanderbilt Cup.

Using my Google Earth app on the computer, I retraced the abandoned LIRR and pinpointed the highlighted points of the towns/villages, etc.

The route cannot be duplicated as wholly 1/4th of the route no longer exists due to housing, parkland and golf courses.

Such is progress. And I wouldn’t want to drive in New York traffic anyway.

The history is exciting and the story in the magazine is fantastic.

Upon further study and mapping, it would theoretically be possible to retrace the 1906 race route, with two minor deviations. But the 1908, 1909, and 1910 are impossible to recreate. Part of the Long Island Motor Parkway, which hosted 9 miles of the 1908 race, is surrounded by houses. A land developer has been trying since 1984 to be allowed to build houses on the portions of land where the viewing grandstand (5,000 person capacity) stood.
