I thought the Ruston Hornsby stationary engine might be familiar to some of the group. I couldn't find Damside Engineering on the web.

I believe the engine is driving a Van de Graff generator connected to the driver, perhaps with the aim of keeping him alert.

Funny picture, what strikes me as odd is that on most pictures from the era you see working men dressed in shirt and vest with neck ties and everything, but in this case they are wearing coveralls while the caption of the photo says 'fancy dress parade' :?: ;)
