I like to use a 1915 timing gear cover in my 1913's because I am able to use a modern seal in them. The outside appearance is identical to the 1913.

Larry - I've seen & heard of the earlier covers being milled out to accept the modern seal - doing a '15 engine right now and installed a new cam gear nut a modern seal for the fella !

Somewhere along the way, the covers also got the wide seal groove for the crankshaft seal. I use these when I can find one so that the white A model seal can be used at the front.

The narrow rope seals are also available - installed one yesterday !

Steve, you're a font of good sources ! Who has the rope seals ?
Dumb question: would pump packing work ?

I got mine from Lang's - I believe they might also be early V-8. Not sure about pump packing as it might not appreciate petroleum exposure unless it was specific to the gas & oil industry.

I have a collection of old stock narrow rope seals for my cars. The 1915 covers I use still use the narrow type. It would be nice to know when Ford introduced the wide seal.

You better edit your profile and remove “Original” from your name…

You can't tell a 15 cover from a 13, once it's on the car. I wonder how good the original felts seals work, since there is no pressure up there? Maybe I should try it sometime.

I believe the felt seal is only adequate until it reaches the saturation point - thus the drain hole in the nose of the crankcase - I've installed both & prefer the rope although I believe the rope is "tougher" on the crankshaft nose.
