Reproduction Exhaust Pipe

If I recall correctly, Vern Campbell used to manufacture what he claimed was a reproduction Exhaust Pipe that was made exactly to the factory prints. Did anyone take over his manufacturing of these, -or are the others available from vendors correctly shaped too?

TIA

Didn't Original Smith have them too?

Larry's pipes were mandrel bent to the proper shape BUT they were made to use and original Ford muffler that used the internal steel nut in the pipe & the pipe was utilized as the small baffle.

Lang's is reported to have the correct pipe shape - there have been incorrect pipes out for years !

Larry made a run of them a few years ago. But I think he said that was all.

One thing which will affect the fit of the pipe is the straightness of the frame. Many frames sag on the right side and that will make the bend appear to be wrong, when it is actually the location of the manifold in relation to the muffler which is incorrect.

Or, you can make your own to the Ford Print. Image is captured from Benson Ford Research site, under digital documents, free to use. Just search in the search box 'Model T exhaust pipe'.

Brent, I talked to Vern after he started selling the stainless steel exhaust pipes and congratulated him about how well they fit.

His pipes had two bends where the other ones only had one, so the bends were not as sharp or squeezed in so much.

He told me the second ben was required as his machine could not bend quite enough.

Paul Larson was making the stainless steel mufflers and he sold the business which also was discontinued.

My 1926 T still has one of each and they are still shiney!

I also purchased stainless steel exhaust pipe and it's stainless steel welded muffler years ago and like Jim mentioned they're still shiny and still performing well with a mellow sound all their own.

I sent Brent a message about Vern Campbell's exhaust pipes, but evidentially, he didn't receive it. In it I explained that I had contacted Vern's widow and she said she still had some of the last run. I offered to buy all of them from her, but she declined. She did sell me one pipe which was mailed to me. She said that she (or a representative) went to the Michigan T Jamboree, every year and took pipes and sold some there. I have no idea whether she has sold them all, or if she still has any for sale as this was probably 5 years ago.

Thanks Terry. I will see about contacting Doris Ann and see if she still has any for sale.

You blokes get it easy. Try forming a pipe that gets from the manifold, around the ends of the pedals, clear of the underside of the starter switch, and then out the back to the muffler.

I loaned a chassis, complete with engine in place, to a local specialist exhaust shop, and they wrote a program for their bender which has resulted in some excellent pipes. Our club buys them in batches and provides them for anyone who needs one. We went from one in ten that did fit from the previous supply, to one in ten that doesn't fit. That one is usually at the flange where it is mated to a bent manifold.

I've still got a few 1914 and later pipes. For the 1913's they don't work as well, because the the muffler is placed differently. Keep in mind they changed the muffler bracket.

It used to be that Henry's, when it was owned by Harry Black, supplied an exhaust pipe for RHD cars. It was locally manufactured in Shepparton, if I recall correctly. That was 20 years when I bought one, so don't know if it's still available.

John, those were the ones which required a deal of manipulation to get them to fit. Nothing that a couple of hours of couldn't fix A convenient fork in a tree made a useful tool to adjust the bends to get the tailpipe heading in the right direction. I suspect they were made individually using a set of reference jigs, so some fitted OK, others not so. With a computer controlled bender, they come out like peas in a pod. Our RHD items are much more complicated than the US equivalent.

Stainless steel would be my choice, even though it wasn't yet invented at the time of the Model T.
Most people wouldn't spot the difference.

I have a stainless pipe on mine, even though it offends my sense of originality.

Allan, that's interesting to know, because mine fitted perfectly. I must have got lucky with one of the good ones. Even so, the clearance between it and the starter switch is something which could have been improved on.

There was from my understanding 3 exhaust pipes that Ford used?

4037- style that was used 09-12-early 13. Pipe slid into exhaust manifold. Larry Smith made a run of these a while back.

4307B- new style 1913-20 now with a flared end to late up to the exhaust manifold. Larry seems to indicate that there were some variations in 14? Larry perhaps you can chime in on this?

4307C- redesigned to be longer and punched for cross piece.

I find it interesting that vendors sell a pipe that fits all years, granted many of the manifolds are repos anyways. I’m guessing also that many of the mufflers are made to accommodate the universal style of repo exhaust pipe. I have one of Larry’s pipes that was made for the 09-12 and I must say it is excellent quality and accuracy.
