I’ve never bothered, as the cracks are generally visible to the naked eye. Bottom of the water jacket, especially behind the water inlet. Also look inside the valve chamber. And then look between the valve seats and the cylinder bores. After hot tanking the cracks are usually quite obvious.
Crankshafts I Always get magnafluxed I usually measure first, and if they won’t clean up at bigger than.020” undersize I set them aside!!

We typically charge $80.00 . In order for the magnaflux to work properly the block has to be perfectly clean,no paint, oil or dirt.

Philip, the charge often includes two processes. To do the job well requires the block to be thoroughly cleaned first. This may mean hot tanking the block prior to the crack test.

I just had a block done. Wasn’t hot tanked. It is baked at a high temperature then blasted with a fine steel shot. Then magnafluxed. It cost me $100.
