Today’s project is get the Tobin Arp line boring machine operating. With the operating instructions in hand, most of the steps are pretty self explanatory. Untill it gets to the section on securing the block to the parallels,
It says to clamp to a stud at each end of the block. Move the parallels out such that it pulls the stud into the V of the parallel and clamp with P-655.
This seems odd in that on my machine I would be using a stud at the corn of the block….. seems that clamping at the center would be a better option?
Am I missing something ?

Once you put the braces on the pan rail it's very sturdy and with a sharp cutter it's not putting much pressure on the block, jmo

1stt step is to secure the block to the parallels using the lever clamps on the sides of the parallel uprights. Block is then adjusted to align with the bar supports. Next to Final step is to connect corner straps/braces from the pan rail to the machine columns, being careful to not shift/move the block.
Last step is to attach brace rod from pan rail to the drive unit. This is all covered pretty well in the factory manual and also on utube.

One of the reasons for clamping on both sides of a block on a TA14 to to eliminate any chance of it rocking on the parallels. After it has been clamped down I always check the block or crankcase in both planes to make sure there isn't and possible movement while boring it. And a second time after connecting the two steady straps from the back of the machine and from the power head and feed unit.
