Model TT rear wheels and rims

Post by Kansas Rust Buzzard » Tue May 28, 2019 8:49 pm

Hi, first post. I am a farmer who is wanting to do threshing shows and that got me into Model T trucks to dump the grain into. I have picked up parts here and there but rear rims and wheels have kind of eluded me. I found a set of rims and tires (junk tires) listed at an auction that were the right size so I went and bought them. The people selling them thought they were really Chevy but the rims look about right. One still had a decent spoked wheel that I have posted pics of that had a plain hub cap. I don't think the wheel itself is Ford but can I use a Chevy rim on a Ford wheel? I don't yet have the TT rear wheels, just a bare axle with brakes so I don't have anything to compare. The clincher type looks kind of the same? Sorry for the stupid question but I am just starting out. Its been a lot of fun so far and if this truck turns out I could see a car in my future. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Not going to comment on the wheel photos but the first/top photo is of a Canadian rim - they use a "special" rim tool inserted into the small holes on the outer rim area and that's a removable pin holding the joint together, which apparently, the latch has become un-riveted !

I don’t think that’ll work farmer Aaron. The inside pic of that hub appears to be for a front wheel. Don’t see any way a brake drum can be fastened. The taper for the ends of your TT axles probably won’t match that hub either.
I don’t know why I turned out this way. My parents were decent people 🤪

That is a good question about the year, was the original engine the only way to tell? I got a replacement out of a car, the original frame is TT with the worm gear rear end. I suppose I could tell some by the height of the radiator and firewall? I have not got a hood yet, or a good one, cattle tromped this one. I do not have the fenders or brackets so unless I can tell from the frame I don't know? Like I said, I am very new to this.

I didn't know they put front tires that big on back then but I see what you mean about the brake drums, Thanks. Kind of confused about the Canadian rims, these had been in the family of the people who sold them for as long as the 65 or so year old man could remember?

Thanks again, I am trying not to be a pest.

KRB,

Don't think you are being a pest. At least, not any more than being that annoying guy who
owns a T or TT. We are all that guy, here ! Relish your low place in life and wear it like a
badge of honor .... you are not boring ! 💥

Not sure when the TT's started getting the serial number stamped on the frame, but it
should match the original engine, and if your frame is of the right age, you will find in on the
top of the frame rail, right where the passenger door opens.

Early TT's had 23" rear wheels. I *think* it was 1924 when Ford went to the heavier 20"
wheels. My truck was built in January of 1926. If it is at all relevant to helping ID your
truck/parts, just ask and I will take photos and do my best to explain what mine has going
on.
More people are doing it today than ever before !

Keep barkin' and thinkin' Aaron!
Keep on the lookout for TT rear wheels, rims and rings. It can sometimes be a bugger to find good rims and rings and awfully expensive to replace with new rims...
I got lucky with Lucky, the 25 here..
I'll help too where I can. :)
600 X 20's goin' on my rear rims later this year if the OT projects don't suck it all up. $$$
I don't know if ya can match Chevrolet rims to TT wheels/felloes. Safely. :)
Since I lost my mind mind, I feel more liberated

Aaron,

The MTFCA Mile High Club is having a swap meet on June 8th at the Adams County Fairgrounds just North of Denver. There might be some TT wheels there. Never know what will show up for sale. I have a TT and know exactly what you're going through. You could come to the swap meet or I could look for you. Just let me know what you want/need and your price range. Afterwards, we can set up something to get the items to you.

Good Luck,
Terry

Thanks everyone, you guys have a friendly and helpful board here! I am studying up as fast as I can on this. I am still trying to figure out if it will fit somehow, I will never tag this truck, I live 10 miles out of town so it will just be used here in the yard and hopefully when I do my threshing show someday. If I try to take something like this to town the paved roads don't have shoulders and the cattle trucks are running 75mph night and day so its not hardly worth the risk. Thanks again, I may take you guys up on some offers, I watched Model T Youtube Vids until I dozed off last night. :-)

The interior and exterior view of a FOR SALE TT 6.00-20 wheel, rim and new tire and the mounted wheel picture is of a TT 32-4.5 wheel, rim and tire. Both will have the emergency brake drum. I also have some good TT emergency brake shoes for sale. I hope this helps

Thanks for all the comments and photos, those wheel photos were great! So you know, I am in SW Kansas, basically half way between Dodge and LIberal in No man's land, not many Ts out here, a few As but the clubs are not active like they used to be. I am trying to plant milo so I may not check this for a while but I did get over in a "goodies" pile and found some items, some T parts and some Maxwell and some I don't know what. I don't think the rims I took pics of are Ford, maybe they go on those disc Maxwell wheels? I think the wood wheels are Ts, there is a pretty good pile of wire spoked wheels, I assumed they were Model A as there was a couple firewalls and frames that I know were but there was a set of wires with a smaller hub that I took a picture of, I am sure its not T but I thought I would post it. I am almost positive this fender is a T and later I found what I think is the mate, I don't know what year they would be but they are repairable. Thanks again everyone. I really appreciate your help, I farm and have another job so it is hard for me to go anyplace and look so the net is my best source. I ordered a Ford body parts book, a reprint, what other books are good for learning how to ID different years? Thanks

That is a Model A wire wheel. I have a friend in Salinas(sp) that might be able to help you out. Is that relatively close to you?

Looks like a great project Forest, thanks for the pics. D Hart, Its about 225 miles so yea, pretty close. If that is an A the bigger diameter centers must have been V8 Fords, there was a pile of them. I am going to be in the field for a while but will get back to this later, can anyone think of any books I can buy that would help someone starting out? Thanks

Also yo help determine the age range of your frame you may check out this thread
http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/25 ... 1339216654

The 26/27 trucks had additional mounting holes and in theory should have a frame rail stamp.

If you are looking to turn the truck into a driver there are a few things you may want to check or track down. Two different worm drives exist, one is a low speed and one is a higher speed. This is indicated by the number of teeth on the ring gear. There are also TT ruxtel 2 speed rear ends.

We have been told (but have never seen) cast wheels made for the tt. Early model aa's used the same rear end so it may be that this is where they came from or where an accessory.

The forum is probably your best source for TT specific info, but most of the t books cover engine, trans, electrical etc.
