I’m helping a club member with her car, and found the transmission brake band appears to have real brake linings. It was her father’s car and wasn’t driven much, I’ve checked the drum and found no burns or cracking, some light wear. Going to put Scandinavia material on the band.

Has anyone seen this before ?

Yep - have an engine & trans. job in the shop now that had that type of brass impregnated hard lining on the brake only - too hard IMO - I recall back in the 60's - 70's where "brake & clutch" from fork lifts & Cats was being used.

We had a local brake shop in town called Brake and Clutch supply in the 50’s thru the 80’s. The owner was an old car enthusiast and loved T’s among a few other brands.
I can remember visiting the shop and learning about Model T’s and transmission lining would come up. He had all kinds of linings he used in the business and found that using brass impregnated linings would work BUT would begin chewing the drums up in T transmissions.

As time went on he experimented with different types of automatic transmission lining that worked OK but early drum wear ended that. Kevlar was coming along later and Scandies were still used a lot. Just my two cents worth which isn’t worth much!

I'll post a photo of the brake drum when the owner brings it back - pretty good "wear" pattern !

The brass pieces in there are never good on the babbitt bearings have seen the mess before.

Yup. I remember having bonded linings installed on a T in the 1960's. car left my ownership shortly thereafter so no news on what damage the linings did to drums or other engine innards. It was just a "thing" back then to get away from Scandinavia, looking for longer band life. Then came wood and now kevlar.

I have a couple of sets of those bonded lining bands that I used in the 60's-70's, on the shelf. Changed to Kevlar when it came available. Never could get that bonded stuff off the bands. Had to get another set to use.

Whatever the lining material is, the RIVITS were installed backwards.... Wood linings installation would have the rivet on the lining side.

This is a HARD lining.
The rivets are installed correctly.

I think I bought a NOS set recently at a swap meet. They are ASBESTOS! I plan to install them as brake bands. I keep my eyes open for Scandinavia for use on the reverse and low.

They are crane brake lining, I had them in both my T's they worked well and held adjustments. Pedals felt hard as rocks with them, when I had Joe Bell do my engines he was dead against them for reasons stated in his post. I think I still have a set on the shelf, makes for a good conversation piece. By the way I did go to Kevies, I do like them.

Les, correct me if I misunderstood your comment. Are you stating, you would use this material as a TRANSMISSION BRAKE BAND ?

That is what the set l bought are for (actually they are a set of 3 for all the transmission bands)!

Asbestos in T transmission bands is likely nothing to be concerned about. There is no chance of free, friable asbestos being produced. Far better in this application than in usual brakes and the dust they produce.

Alan, more concerned with the brass and material getting into Babbitt and the quick wearing of the drums. This stuff feels like 60-80 grit sandpaper.

Would you use this material in your transmission? Trying to understand pros and cons of using this material with brass woven in.
