Starter ring gear

I have a '14 T with a recently rebuilt motor (bought this way) and now I'm thinking of installing a starter. I already have the later (1920) hogshead with lettered pedals and a new starter but I don't know if the motor has the ring gear installed. Is there any way of seeing or feeling to tell if the ring gear is installed without removing the hogshead. Thanks in advance.

You should be able to remove the inspection plate on the hogshead and look inside and see the outer edge of the flywheel. A ring gear mounts to the rear side of the flywheel and is visible thru the inspection plate.

you might need to replace the flywheel. I don't think the older flywheels were machined for a starter ring.

Also, the Mag Coil ring needs a notch on the left side to clear the starter bendix drive. Unless the previous owner was planning on a starter at some time later, more than likely the original flywheel and mag ring was used.
