We're hosting a 3-day tour in May in Russell, Kansas and the surrounding area. Here is more information. Feel free to contact me with questions or for a registration form.
Flatland T’s of Central Kansas
2019 Spring Tour
Russell, Kansas
May 25-27, 2019 This will be a hub tour, starting and ending each day in Russell, Kansas. This area is known as “Post Rock” country. Because of the lack of trees when this area was being settled, the pioneers used limestone to build houses, buildings, and tens of thousands of fence posts. The terrain is relatively flat, with some hills. We’ll tour paved roads, with just a couple miles of hard-packed dirt because there is no other option. Because hard-packed dirt is usually more scenic, we’ll have some places where that is an option in the directions.
We are asking for a $10 registration fee to help offset the costs of the tour book, windshield card, snacks and drinks. See the registration form attached. You must preregister so we have a count of people attending. All stops and meals will be pay-as-you-go.
Friday May 24-Arrive in Russell. Registration/hospitality will be open starting at 3pm at the host hotel. Dinner on your own. Hospitality room will be open for informal socializing in the afternoon/evening.
Saturday May 25-We’ll start with a brief participant’s meeting in the parking lot at 9am. Then we’ll tour approximately 85 miles roundtrip to the town of Lucas. The drive there and back is very scenic with some hills. Lucas is a great town full of fun, quirky places to visit, most within walking distance of each other. The Garden of Eden is a must! Also, visit the Deeble House. And don’t miss the World’s Largest Collection of the World’s Smallest Versions of the World’s Largest Things. And the Grassroots Art Museum. And if nature calls, visit the Lucas Bowl- voted the No. 2 restroom in the US. Lastly, be sure to visit Brant’s market. Stop at an antique mall on your way back, if you like.
Lunch is on your own in Lucas.
Dinner is on your own in Russell.
Sunday May 26-Tour approximately 80 miles roundtrip to Hays. Here we’ll visit the Sternberg Museum of Natural History. We’ll also visit the Kansas Merci Boxcar, an 1890’s railroad boxcar, which was a gift to the state of Kansas after WWII. There are numerous antique stores in Hays as well. We’ll have several more short stops in Hays. On the way back to Russell, we’ll stop at The Basilica of St. Fidelis, The Cathedral of the Plains.
Lunch is on your own in Hays.
Dinner will be together at Meridy’s, near the hotel.
Monday May 27- Tour approximately 25 miles in and around Russell. We’ll visit the Oil Patch Museum, dedicated to the history and process of retrieving oil, including the 1923 discovery well which opened drilling to 2/3 of Kansas. Then we’ll stop at the Fossil Station Museum, one of the 10 best castles in Kansas. We’ll finish the tour around noon to allow for people to head for home.
