At one time it was recommended to lap on the the new gas cut offs. Is that still the recommended way?
This 24 Touring.

How does that keep the potatoe from leaking?
That is the question, do the new gas cutoffs still need to be lapped in like they did years ago?

Dan, I have a new one on my 26 which is different than the 24. It did not require lapping in the shutoff valve. If the ones for under tank are made by the same outfit then I would say not necessary.

If they leak, they do !
Seriously, I have found that it’s best to plan on being your own quality control when resorting to reproduction parts. Examine a new “spud” carefully, experience with valves of this type is a help. Make sure the valve seats well in the body, and the retaining spring is doing its job. Lap if necessary, and I would recommend using a fuel type lubricant / sealant. Do the same for the drain petcock, and you’re good to go !!

This is not for me , but a new local guy.
I have not heard any reports good or bad on these lately.
The worry is the valve leaking to the outside not so much as by passing.
Just trying to make his car safe.

Are you referring to the accessory carburetor shut-off or the sediment bulb under the tank ? The new repro sediment bulbs, I believe produced by Snyder's is a good item using a half dozen with no problems - the currently available carburetor shut-offs can be problematic if one doesn't lift up a smidge whilst turning then applying slight downward pressure to seat again.

I recently purchased a new sediment bowl for a customer. I noticed the shutoff valve had a wad of lubricant completely blocking the flow in the on position. Excessive EZ turn? Upon clearing the thru hole I noticed the hole thru the valve is about 1/2 the size of the original. Enough to effect fuel flow?? As Rich B. stated - you got to be your own quality control.
To answer the original question. I didnt feel lapping was necessary with the EZ turn. Maybe when it washes out.

The "tator" is going to be coming off my T pickup at some point in the near future. It didn't leak for a while but seeps now and looses all my gas over time.
