Steering upgrade on my ‘21

Finally I have cracked the code to tight steering. The new refurbed column I got from the swap meet did the trick. Not an easy change to r&r the whole column but it needed to be done.
The last 2 culprits were the steering shaft itself and the gear housing. It turns out my planetary gear pins had completely worn out the receiving holes - to the point they wobbled in place. Which also caused excess wear on the brass housing gear. Together this caused a ton of slop in the wheel. All the other components had been refurbed, this was the last piece.

My test drive tonight was amazing... it’s a whole new car. Zero play now and it goes right where I Point it. Now it’s time for Touring!

Is that the column you picked up at Auburn?

Yup... just got home this afternoon and tackled it first thing. I’ll put in the new head tomorrow!

An added improvement is the new quadrant on the refurb column actually works. The levers actually stay where you put them. So that’s how that’s supposed to work. My old one was totally worn out. Interesting that you can’t buy repos of the non-brass quadrants.

I think I have a couple pretty nice original quadrants in my parts hoard? I need to keep a couple for probable use, but I don't need the nice ones. If you need another? I would be nice.

This is what my old steering shaft looked like. I had to put my thumb under the long pin to keep it from falling out when I took the photo.

It's completely rebuilt now and ready to go back in but other projects have taken priority.

That’s pretty close to what mine looked like. I still can’t get over how nice it was to drive the car after fixing this.

Good to hear the new column solved the problem. Replacing the whole column was probably easier than changing the shaft and quadrant in the old one.
